Things to do in Kuressaare
Cross the moat to Kuressaare Castle and explore one of the best-preserved strongholds in the Baltic. Enormous stone bastions and defensive walls protect the castle, which dates back to the 13th century. Test your bow and arrow skills on the archery range and attend outdoor concerts in the summer. Stroll around the tree-shaded grounds and explore the moat with rowboat rentals.
Kuressaare Beach is at the foot of the castle and features a strip of soft sand overlooking a picturesque bay. Sunbathe on the sand and work up a sweat on the beach volleyball court. Rent a kayak and paddle out into the bay for fantastic views of Kuressaare Castle.
Saaremaa Museum occupies the keep and features exhibits on the unique history, culture and ecology of Kuressaare. Descend into the dungeon to see the gloomy rooms where prisoners were once fed to hungry lions. The café commands sweeping views over Subic Bay and the surrounding countryside.
Get lost in a sea of colourful stalls in Kuressaare Market. The open-air market is a great place to try traditional Estonian treats like “kohuke” chocolate-covered cheese. Quench your thirst with a glass of “kali” root beer. Wooden handicrafts, beaded jewellery and hand-knitted sweaters make excellent souvenirs.
