Things to do in Kotka
Board a ferry and sail to Kotkan Saaret, a trio of islands off the coast of Kotka. They were used as military outposts in the 18th century and dotted with the remains of naval strongholds. Kirkonmaa is one of the prettiest and features beautiful beaches, shady forest trails and scenic picnic spots.
Discover Finland’s vibrant underwater ecosystem at Maretarium. The modern aquarium features enormous, themed tanks filled with dozens of Finnish fish species. Watch saltwater species cruise around the seven-metre-deep Baltic tank and see trout, salmon and perch swimming in crystalline tanks inspired by the country’s freshwater lakes, rivers and streams.
Learn about shipwrecks, icebreakers and the booming fishing industry at Merikeskus Vellamo. The museum is housed in a metallic, wave-shaped building overlooking the dock. Tarmo, a mammoth icebreaker built in the early 1900s, is the showpiece. See an Olympic gold medallist yacht in the cavernous boat hall and admire artefacts salvaged from Vrouw Maria, a Dutch merchant ship carrying precious cargo owned by Catherine the Great.
Wrap up a day of sightseeing at a traditional sailor’s bar, which offers live music and dancing. Outdoor terraces overlook the dockside and are perfect for enjoying the summer sunshine. Order local specialties like salmon soup, pickled Baltic herring and “loimulohi” smoked trout. Save room for “possos” deep-fried donuts on your way home.
