About Kolamaafushi

Escape the crowds on Kolamaafushi, a palm-fringed island marooned in the Indian Ocean. It’s part of the Huvadhoo Atoll, a ring-shaped archipelago made up of more than 250 islands. White-sand beaches, jewel-toned water and lush tropical vegetation give Kolamaafushi a postcard-perfect feel. Instead of luxury resorts, you’ll find family-run inns and friendly B&Bs.

Things to do in Kolamaafushi

You’re never too far from a beautiful beach in Kolamaafushi. Most of the island is surrounded by powder-white sand and leafy coconut palms. Walk out onto the sandbars at low tide and explore neighbouring islets.

Be amazed by colourful corals and underwater caves at Hurandhoo Reef. Whale sharks and manta rays are often spotted at this world-class dive site. Hithaadhoo Reef, off the south-west tip of the island, is home to enormous sea turtles. Look for lobsters and octopus peering out of the rocks.

Kolamaafushi is surrounded by water, so it’s no surprise seafood is a local delicacy. Try specialties like “kandukukulhu” fish curry, seared tuna and “kulhi boakibaa” spicy fish cakes. Fried “tharafone” breadfruit is a staple. You’ll also see plenty of rice, curry and pappadums. Enjoy “huvadhoo bondi” coconut and brown sugar paste wrapped in dried banana leaf for dessert. Stay hydrated with young coconuts plucked straight from the tree.

Charter a boat and visit Hithaadhoo, a nearby island covered with tropical vegetation. It’s a sanctuary for migratory birds and is one of the best places in The Maldives to see frigates. Boat charters are also a fantastic way to visit uninhabited islands in the Huvadhoo Atoll. Sunbathe on deserted beaches, snorkel with colourful tropical fish and enjoy lunch under a palm tree.

Getting around Kolamaafushi

Kolamaafushi is small and easy to get around on foot or bicycle. Speedboats travel between Koddoo Island and Kolamaafushi in 20 minutes. Male Velana International Airport on Hulhule Island in the North Male Atoll is a gateway to The Maldives.
