Located south of Koh Lanta, Koh Ngai is a tiny but idyllic island in Krabi Province. It forms part of the Trang Archipelago, a series of Andaman Sea islands that are renowned for their stunning beaches, wildlife-filled jungle and colourful coral reefs.
Things to do in Ko Ngai
Kick back on the white sandy beach that stretches along the east coast of Koh Ngai, with a handful of bars and restaurants where you can dine throughout the day. Rent a thatched umbrella and a sun lounger to while away an afternoon and refresh with a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Andaman Sea.
If you’re feeling active, you can follow the footpath that leads through Koh Ngai’s dense jungle and accesses the south-facing Paradise Beach. Continue for another 30 minutes and you’ll reach a viewpoint that offers magnificent views across the island-dotted waters. It’s particularly majestic in the late afternoon as the sun sinks towards the horizon.
Koh Ngai makes an idyllic base for exploring the Trang Archipelago, which encompasses more than 40 islands and islets off the south-west coast of Thailand. Large parts of the archipelago are protected within Hat Chao Mai National Park, a Ramsar-listed site that is home to endangered dugongs and rare black-necked storks. Rent a longtail boat to visit Koh Mook’s Emerald Cave and snorkel the colourful reefs surrounding Koh Kradan, which is famed for its underwater wedding ceremonies.
Getting around Ko Ngai
Regular ferries connect from Koh Lanta to Koh Ngai or you can fly from Bangkok to Trang Airport on the mainland and catch a ferry from there. As there are no roads on the island, getting around is either done or foot or by using a longtail boat, which can easily be rented along the coast.
