Located where the Klaeng River meets the Gulf of Thailand, Klaeng is a breezy coastal town in the province of Rayong. It’s home to laid-back beaches and magnificent Buddhist temples, while it’s also a short boat ride from the island of Ko Samet.
Things to do in Muang Klaeng
Dotting Klaeng district are several ornate Buddhist temples, such as Wat Ta Khian Thong and Wat Sriwanopas Sathitporn. Admire the gilded pavilion of Wat Khao Yai Chum or relax in the shady courtyard of Wat Khao Samphao Thong. A massive white standing Buddha dominates Wat Phlong Sawai, which offers magnificent coastal views from its hilltop location.
For a day on the sand, head to Hat Suan Son, which is backed by the wooded landscapes of the Phe Arboretum. In addition to renting a beach umbrella and a sun lounger, you can feast on authentic Thai food at the waterfront cafes and admire the Chinese-inspired temple that watches over the beach. The Phe Arboretum highlights Thailand’s native flora and species that have been economically significant to the country.
A short boat ride from Klaeng will take you to Ko Samet, an idyllic island ringed by white sandy beaches lapped by the Gulf of Thailand’s turquoise waters. Much of the island is protected within Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park, which provides habitat for Javan mongoose, long-tailed macaques and palm civets. Explore along one of the jungle walking trails or venture underwater to discover the park’s vibrant marine life.
