One of the fastest-growing towns in the area, Kirwee lies west of Christchurch in New Zealand’s Canterbury region. It was named after a town in India by Colonel De Renzie Brett, who played an important role in bringing water to inland Canterbury. Kirwee straddles the Midland Line, which connects Rolleston and Greymouth.
Things to do in Kirwee
North of Kirwee is Waimakariri River Regional Park, which encompasses 15,000 hectares on the banks of its namesake waterway. It’s divided into numerous sections that offer everything from fishing to mountain biking and walking. Abundant birdlife has been recorded along the Waimakariri River, with regular sightings of kingfishers, fantails and grey warblers.
Kirwee makes a good base for exploring Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island. It’s renowned for its English heritage, with picturesque green spaces interspersed with historic stone buildings, many of which have been rebuilt since the devastating 2011 earthquake. You can punt down the Avon River, tour Riccarton House and visit the innovative Cardboard Cathedral or simply relax in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
On the western outskirts of Christchurch is the International Antarctic Centre, which brings to life the experience of visiting the “Great White Continent”. You can step inside a snowstorm room, meet friendly husky dogs and enjoy a ride in an all-terrain vehicle used for getting around in Antarctica. Also within the complex is an exhibit featuring little blue penguins, which are native to New Zealand.
Getting around Kirwee
Kirwee is around 40 minutes’ drive from Christchurch and 30 minutes from Christchurch International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. A bus route travels through Kirwee and the town is small enough to explore on foot. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the area.
