Kirkjubaejarklaustur is a pocket-sized town framed by rugged hills and grassy plateaus. Walk around Landbrotshólar and be amazed by the otherworldly landscape. The field is dotted with “pseudocraters” that formed during a volcanic eruption in the 10th century. Kirkjugólf is another geological phenomenon and features unique, hexagon-shaped basalt columns formed by wind and wave erosion.
Hike along the rim of Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon and enjoy spectacular views over the rocky landscape and meandering Fjaðrá River. You’ll find more incredible trails in Skaftafell National Park. Hike to the tongue of the shimmering Vatnajökull Glacier and watch waterfalls tumble down sheer cliffs. Look for wildlife like reindeer, Arctic foxes and birds of prey like eagles and falcons as you explore the park.
Sample traditional Icelandic cuisine at cosy cafes and restaurants in the village. Start your day with a bowl of “skyr” Icelandic yoghurt topped with fresh berries. Dinner menus feature hearty dishes like “plokkfiskur” fish stew and “hangikjot” smoked lamb. Wash down your meal with a glass of “brennivin” caraway-flavoured schnapps.
