A beautiful stretch of coastline set against a backdrop of jungle-covered mountains, Khao Lak is a relaxing Thai getaway. Khao Lak comprises a series of villages and encompasses Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, but is also known for its private beaches, family-friendly activities and pristine natural attractions.
Things to do in Khao Lak
Khao Lak’s most popular features are its beaches, highlighted by the unspoilt White Sand Beach. Rent a chair and an umbrella to sit back and unwind with your toes in the sand while enjoying ocean views from a variety of surrounding bars and restaurants, such as the Lay restaurant located on Kuk Khak Beach.
Try your hand at scuba diving on the nearby Similan and Surin Islands, choosing your own adventure from one of the local dive schools. Go on an immersive day trip, arrange for your PADI certification or embark on a snorkelling expedition.
Plan a trip to Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park to discover a sprawling expanse of sea cliffs, beaches and waterfalls. Hike one of the many designated trails to catch a glimpse of a hornbill, tapir or a Bengal monitor lizard. Wrap up your day with dinner at the park’s open-air restaurant overlooking the sea.
Want to journey back through time? Check out the International Tsunami Museum, as it offers an intimate exhibition of the tsunami that struck the town back in 2004. Tour the stranded Navy ship, explore the two shops on site and learn more about the event through detailed photographic exhibitions.
Getting around Khao Lak
The best way of getting around Khao Lak is by songthaew or taxi. You can also rent a motorbike or a bicycle to see the sights like a local. Getting around on foot is possible within smaller areas.
