Located where the Paraíba River meets the Atlantic Ocean, João Pessoa is a lively port city in northeastern Brazil. It was founded in 1585 by the Portuguese before being taken by the Dutch in 1634. In 1930, it was named João Pessoa after the former governor and has since been designated as a UNESCO Creative City due to its rich handicraft traditions.
Things to do in João Pessoa
One of João Pessoa's most magnificent buildings is the Church of São Francisco, which lies alongside a convent that was built by the Franciscans in 1589. It is renowned for its Rococo-Baroque architecture and now serves as a cultural centre. Nearby is the Casa da Polvora, a 1710-built gunpowder house that hosts changing exhibitions and concerts.
Rising atop the cliffs of João Pessoa is the Cabo Branco Lighthouse, which was built in the 1970s to resemble a sisal plant. With its triangular shape and “wings”, it is unlike any other lighthouse in the world. The Cabo Branco Lighthouse marks the easternmost point of the Americas and offers sweeping views across the coastline from its base.
For a day at the beach, head to palm-lined Praia de Cabo Branco where you can swim in the refreshing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A wide choice of eateries back the beach, including Bar do Cuscuz and the Tocaia Gastrobar. To the north is Praia de Manaíra with its breezy promenade while blissful Praia da Penha lies to the south.
