Ios, considered one of Europe’s best secret islands, is a beautiful isle in the Greek Cyclades home to 75 kilometers of picturesque coastline. Cycladic architecture and whitewashed buildings are some of the island’s principal attractions, alongside lively cosmopolitan nightlife found in the traditional main square.
Things to do in Ios
The island splits into three main districts, Hora, Chora and Yialos Port. Hora is renowned for its nightlife scene, while Chora is a quiet side of the island that provides access to boutique stores and divine restaurants. Lastly, the waterfront area of Yialos Port is the perfect spot for an evening stroll during sunset.
Watersports fanatics can spend an afternoon on Maganari Beach where diving, windsurfing, and waterskiing are popular. Speed boats are also available for hire and are an excellent way to spend some time out on the ocean.
Ios is also a traditional hilltop town tucked into the cliffs and surrounded by beautiful walking paths and hiking trails. For true local culture, escape the crowds and head uphill past quaint goat farms and picturesque country cottages.
Getting there
Santorini (Thira) National Airport is the closest airport to the island. From here, you can drive north to the coast and take a ferry or high-speed catamaran over to Ios. Make use of the taxis and public buses during the summer months to get around.
