About Horten

Horten is a historic port town with a fascinating Viking heritage. Set on the banks of Oslofjord, it’s known for historic architecture and flower-filled gardens. Visit excellent local history museums and step back in time at one of Norway’s biggest ancient burial grounds.

The town centre is built around a picturesque harbour surrounded by colourful wooden houses. You’re within walking distance of several museums, including the Royal Norwegian Navy Museum where you can peer inside a submarine and climb aboard KNM Narvik, a decommissioned warship.

Borre Mounds is one of the largest Viking burial grounds in Scandinavia. Strolling around the park, you’ll pass by dozens of the grass-covered burial mounds, some more than 1,000 years old. The Midgard Viking Centre features fascinating exhibitions on artefacts found at local archaeological sites.

The nearby town of Åsgårdstrand has a rich artistic heritage. Famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch painted some of his most iconic works here and his former home has been reimagined as a local history museum. Stroll around the picturesque harbour, browse boutique galleries and enjoy lunch at an al fresco café. The nearby villages of Borre, Skoppum, and Nykirke are also worth a visit.
