Things to do in Hitachinaka
To see a stunning display of colourful flowers, head to Hitachi Seaside Park. This 350-hectare city park features an amusement park, large grassland and cycling and BMX tracks. Pack a picnic and soak up the view of blue nemophilas blanketing the park.
The kids will delight at meeting the variety of marine animals housed in Oarai Aquarium Aqua World. You can see over 500 different types of creatures, watch engaging dolphin shows and marvel at the illuminated shark tanks in this seven-storey facility. Afterwards, head to the observation deck to capture views of Mount Fuji in the distance.
For a dose of culture, explore some of Hitachinaka’s most historic landmarks. Oiwa Shrine sits halfway up Mt. Oiwa and is said to be the home of many deities, while Oarai Isosaki Shrine boasts an iconic Torii gate that stands on the reef near Oiso Kaigan. If you want to see 13th-century castle ruins, head to Mito Castle and stroll through its 800 plum trees.

Getting around Hitachinaka
Hitachinaka’s city centre can be explored on foot, while buses, taxis and trains can be used to reach nearby attractions. You can drive 45 minutes south to reach Ibaraki Airport or take the two-hour train to Tokyo.
