Easter Island’s sole town, Hanga Roa boasts inviting streets that hug the South Pacific coast. It features a picturesque fishing harbour and archaeological sites, while its surrounding region reveals mysterious Moai statues, a national park and beautiful beaches.
Things to do in Hanga Roa
Start your exploration of Easter Island at Tongariki, where you can capture a beautiful sunrise view against the 15 Moai statues. See where over 1,200 years ago seafarers carved these statues out of rock and learn why it has become such an iconic symbol of the island.
If you’re interested in archaeology, visit Papa Vaka to see the ancient petroglyphs related to the sea. Admire the various designs and drawings, from faces to depictions and locations of special rituals and traditions. One of the most striking petroglyphs is one that could represent a heke (octopus or squid) or a pikea (crab).
Work up a sweat hiking to the top of Terevaka Volcano, which sits 507 metres above sea level. It’s the highest point on the island and offers stunning panoramic views of Easter Island. You can also visit Rano Raraku, a crater found on the lower slopes of Terevaka that offers views of the nearby volcanoes and ocean.
Take a break from sightseeing at Anakena Beach with a day of sunbathing and swimming in its crystalline waters. Dotted with coconut palms brought over by Tahiti, the coral sand beach is one of the best on the island.
Getting around Hanga Roa
