About Chalki

Halki is a hidden gem marooned in the Aegean Sea. It’s part of the Dodecanese archipelago and offers an authentic taste of life on a Greek island. Stroll along flower-lined streets in the main village and discover postcard-perfect beaches and bays.

Things to do in Chalki

Halki Town is built around a natural harbour and captures the charm of a bygone era. Get lost in a maze of narrow alleyways lined with colourful Italianate houses and grand Venetian villas. Many are uninhabited and have a tumbledown charm. Cafes and tavernas dot the picturesque waterfront. Secure an outdoor table and enjoy local specialties like grilled octopus, baked fish and “spinialo” sea squirts marinated in salt water and olive oil.

Step back in time at the Traditional House of Chalki. The hillside home is more than a century old and has been reimagined as a local history museum. Inside, you can walk through rooms filled with hand-carved wooden furniture, black-and-white photographs and traditional costumes.

Turquoise water and honey-coloured sand fringe Pondamos Beach. Rent a sunbed from the local taverna or roll out your towel on the sand. The water is calm, shallow and perfect for swimming. Nearby Kania Beach will dazzle you with its crystalline water and rocky coastline. Stay hydrated with ice-cold drinks from the beachside taverna.

Follow the steep switchback trail up to Horio, an ancient village perched in the hillsides. Wander around the ruins and enjoy spectacular views over the sparkling Aegean Sea. A cobblestone path winds up to the Knights of St John Castle, where you’ll find even better views.

Getting around Chalki

Local buses are a good way to get around Halki and access beaches. Emborio is compact and easy to get around on foot. Several beaches are within walking distance of the village. Ferries run between Rhodes Town and Halki in 1.5 hours.
