Positioned near the Gulf of Trieste, Grado is encircled by a number of alluring islands sitting in a picturesque lagoon. Along with nearby wildlife reserves, Gardo is blessed with a wealth of historic Italian structures and inviting pizza restaurants and ice creameries.
Things to do in Grado
Nature lovers will enjoy exploring the sprawling Marano-Grado Lagoon, where you can island hop while admiring million-dollar yachts and traditional boats cruising across the water. Alternatively, you can head to the expansive Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve, which boasts 327 hectares of fishing farms, beaches, lagoons and meadows. Keep an eye out for around 260 species of birds.
Are you interested in the local history? Check out the iconic Basilica of Sant'Eufemia, which features vibrant artwork, including intricate floor mosaics and a stunning fresco. Afterwards, venture across to the nearby island of Barbana to get up close to the storied Santuario di Barbana, an ancient Marian shrine that dates back to 582 AD.
Treat yourself to sumptuous Italian cuisine at the family-run restaurants around town, such as Laura e Christian Spaghetti House and Tavernetta all'Androna. The latter is particularly renowned for its desserts. Alternatively, duck into Losteria for home-cooked seafood or head to Antoniazzi Gelateria Dolce Gelato & C. for post-dinner gelato.

Getting around Grado
Grado is best reached by flying into Trieste Airport, which is about 25 minutes’ drive away. You can also catch a train and buses from the airport to Grado. The town is easily explored on foot, while ferries offer access to the nearby islands.
