Surrounded by dozens of islands, Goheung protrudes into the East Sea in the far south of South Korea. It is the name of both the county and its riverside town, which is clustered with traditional Korean eateries. Goheung is famed for its stunning coastal scenery and as the site of the Naro Space Center.
Things to do in Goheung
Nestled at the base of Mount Cheondeung is the Buddhist temple of Geumtapsa, which provides a refuge for Bhikkhuni (Buddhist nuns). Originally built in the 7th century, it is home to several cultural treasures that include Geungnakjeon Hall with its painting of the “Assembly of Spirits”. Of scientific value is the forest of nutmeg yew trees that surrounds the temple.
Rising east of Goheung is Palyeongsan, a 609-metre-high peak that forms part of Dadohaehaesan National Marine Park. A hiking trail leads to its jagged ridge, from where you can enjoy sweeping views across the peninsula and the island-dotted East Sea. In total, there are eight “peaks” to explore, each of which is topped by a marker or cairn.
One of Goheung’s most popular attractions is the Naro Space Center, which was constructed in 2008 to serve the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. In addition to its two launch pads, control tower and rocket manufacturing facilities, it includes a media centre and a museum accessible to visitors. Learn about the space science technology being tested at the site and experience the sights, sounds and smells of the 4D room.
Getting around Goheung
Goheung is just over an hour’s drive from Suncheon and three hours from Yeosu Airport, which has flights to Seoul and Jeju. Regular buses connect to Goheung and travel throughout the county, connecting most of its attractions. Renting a car is the most convenient way of exploring Goheung.
