Gnjilane is a city and municipality located in eastern Kosovo close to the Serbian border and the Binacka Morava river basin. A somewhat remote area, Gnjilane has a rich history rooted in the Ottoman era.
Things to do in Gnjilan
If you find yourself in Gnjilane in the month of January, make sure you attend Flaka e Janarit, a cultural event celebrating Kosovo’s history. Thousands of artists gather at the three-week event, which transforms the city into a cultural metropolis.
The city is also home to an array of tasty eateries, where local cuisine can be enjoyed at Cuco restaurant, Azzurro or Restaurant Bujana. Kosovan specialties include pies, flija and stuffed peppers though dishes vary slightly from region to region.
Getting around Gnjilan
An hour north of Gnjilane sits Prishtina, Kosovo’s largest city and the country's capital. From here you can hire a car and take just over an hour’s drive, but public transport and taxis are also available.
