Whether you explore the bustling streets of the city centre or hike to Buddhist temples hidden in the surrounding mountains, Gimje showcases South Korea through a local lens.
Things to do in Gimje
Founded in 599 AD, Geumsansa is an ancient Korean Buddhism temple. The temple is part of the Jogye Order and is perched on the slopes of Moaksan Mountain, just outside Gimje’s city centre. A brightly-painted façade and tiered swallowtail roof make it one of the most beautiful temples in the area. Depending on the weather, you may see Geumsansa veiled in mist or drenched in sunshine.
Munsusa Temple is another serene temple you can visit near Gimje. It’s set on the summit of Bonghwangsan Mountain and surrounded by lush forests. As you enter the temple complex, you’ll pass by a sacred zelkova tree with a girth or more than five metres.
Escape the city and enjoy the fresh mountain air in Moaksan Provincial Park. Follow the ridgeline trail up to the peak and enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding mountains and forests. The tallest peak is almost 800 metres above sea level. You’ll pass lots of colourful frogs and butterflies along the way.
Every year, more than 1 million people descend on the city for the Gimje Horizon Festival. The city is one of the few places in South Korea where you can see the horizon from a landlocked area. It’s held in the rural Byeokgolje area and features traditional music, street parades, Korean wrestling matches. If you miss the festival, the Byeokgolje Museum of Agricultural Culture is open all year and celebrates the area’s centuries-old rice farming traditions.
