Located partway between Albufeira and Armação de Pêra, Galé is a laid-back coastal neighbourhood in Portugal's Algarve region. It’s surrounded by golden beaches backed by dramatic cliffs and on the doorstep of one of the Algarve’s most rewarding birdwatching spots.
Things to do in Galé
Stretching north-west of Galé is a long expanse of golden sand, which is a popular destination for surfing. Rent an umbrella and a sun lounger for a day of relaxation or hire jet skis and stand-up paddleboards from the local water sports centre. Once you’ve built up an appetite, you can dine on locally caught seafood accompanied by sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean at Pedras Amarelas.
Further along the coastline is the Salgados Golf Course, which offers 18 holes that will challenge players of all abilities. In addition to its water hazards and bunkers, it is studded with towering palm trees. On the golf course’s western edge is the Lagoa dos Salgados, a freshwater wetland frequented by ferruginous ducks and greater flamingos.
On the other side of Galé is Praia de Manuel Lourenço, a picturesque cove backed by golden cliffs. It can be accessed along a spectacular clifftop walk that is particularly impressive at sunset. Further east lie secluded Praia da Balbina and Praia do Castelo, which features fantastic rock formations to explore. Elevated views across the coastline can be enjoyed from the Ponta do Castelo.
