Sign up for heli-hiking expeditions, tramp to pristine alpine lakes and get face-to-face with one of New Zealand's most spectacular glaciers.
Things to do in Fox Glacier
Heli-hiking expeditions run by Fox Glacier Guiding are the only way to set foot on the glacier. From the skies you'll get magnificent views over Fox Glacier, Franz Josef Glacier and the snow-capped Mount Cook. Most also include snow landings where you can explore shimmering ice caves and arches.
Tramping, the Kiwi term for backcountry hiking, offers a unique opportunity to discover Westland Tai Poutini National Park independently. Fox Village has easy access to a trio of trails including Copland Track, where you can soak in thermal springs. Lake Matheson, also known as "mirror lake", offers one of the South Island's best photos.
Starting at Fox Village, the Te Weheka Walkway winds through lush rainforest to a scenic lookout commanding sparkling views of the glacier face. Other popular trails include the half-hour Moraine Walk and the Minnehaha Walk. The wheelchair-accessible River Walk Lookout Track is a great option for families and mobility-impaired travellers.
Visit the West Coast Wildlife Centre in the neighbouring town of Franz Joseph, an award-winning sanctuary where you can meet critically-endangered Rowi and Haast Tokoeka Kiwi birds. You'll also learn about conservation efforts, such as the hatching and incubation programme.
