The guardhouse has been reimagined as the excellent Cavalry Museum where you can check out uniforms, weapons and equestrian gear used by the legendary Finnish regiment. Admire Scandinavian masterpieces at the Lappeenranta Art Museum and peer into the old Commandant’s House furnished with 18th-century antiques. The Kristiinankatu main street is lined with dozens of colourful shops selling artisan goods.
History buffs shouldn’t miss the 18th-century Orthodox Church, one of the oldest in Finland. Majurska House has been reimagined as an atmospheric cafe where you can enjoy coffee and cake while the grassy lakeside foreshore is great for enjoying a picnic and basking in the sunshine. Near the old water gate, Linnoituksen Krouvi restaurant serves chef-inspired cuisine in an elegant setting. From Christmas markets to summer concerts, Fortress of Lappeenranta hosts exciting events throughout the year.
