The beaches in Espinho are perfect if you want to swim, sunbathe and surf. Praia da Baia wraps around the bay and features gently rolling waves. A promenade skirts the beach and is dotted with breezy cafes and restaurants while shallow pools that form at low tide are perfect for kids. Surf shops rent boards and offer lessons if you’re a beginner.
Piscina Solario Atlantico de Espinho, an outdoor pool fed with ocean water, is a great alternative to the beach. The complex was built in the 1940s and will charm you with its Art Deco style. Lounge chairs and parasols dot the sun terrace and make the most of the sweeping Atlantic Ocean views.
Espinho Market is one of the oldest in Portugal. The outdoor market is held every Monday and is a great place to stock up on fresh produce and local delicacies like cheese, cured meat and “pastel de nata” custard tarts. Check out the ducks and chickens in the livestock section and shop for souvenirs at the handicraft stalls.
Seafood is always on the menu in Espinho. Restaurants will tempt you with local dishes like “bacalhau com natas” salted cod baked in a cream sauce, “arroz de polvo” diced octopus cooked with tomatoes and “caldeirada” fish stew. You can also try Portuguese classics like “cabrito assado” roasted goat and spicy piri piri chicken. Save room for “bola de Berlim” Portuguese donuts filled with egg yolk custard.
Getting around Espinho
Espinho is compact and easy to get around on foot, while taxis are a fast and affordable way to cover longer distances. Porto is 30 minutes away by car or train. Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is a 30-minute drive away.
