Donauworth is a historic town set at the junction of the Danube and Wornitz Rivers. It’s a popular stop on the Romantic Road and home to beautiful historic buildings. Explore the atmospheric historic district, stroll along scenic riverside paths and visit a fantastic doll museum.
Things to do in Donauwörth
Admire hundreds of vintage dolls at the Käthe-Kruse-Puppenmuseum. The museum is housed in a former monastery and filled with dolls designed by the famous German doll-maker Käthe Kruse. In addition to beautiful handmade dolls, the museum features exhibits on the life of Käthe Kruse.
Walk through Rieder Tor, a centuries-old city gate built with rose-coloured bricks. It’s one of the last remaining sections of the ancient fortifications that once surrounded Donauworth. The gate funnels you onto Reichsstrasse, a bustling thoroughfare lined with handsome historic buildings painted in a rainbow of pastels. Many were damaged during World War II bombing raids but have been beautifully restored. The street is a shopping hub and home to high-street shops like H&M, as well as independent boutiques.
Enjoy a relaxing stroll along the banks of the Danube and Wornitz Rivers. Tree-lined paths skirt both riverbanks and take you past picturesque parks and gardens. Stop to enjoy a coffee and watch boats cruise past. Rent a bike if you want to cover more ground.
From cosy cafes serving enormous slabs of Black Forest cake to rustic restaurants specialising in “schweinshaxe” pork knuckle, it’s easy to find traditional Bavarian cuisine in Donauworth. Soft and chewy pretzels are an excellent accompaniment to Bavarian beer.
