Things to do in Dodoma
Book a guided tour of Bunge, also known as the National Assembly of Tanzania. It’s home to the country’s parliament and features a unique, curved façade inspired by traditional African architecture.
Gaddhaffi Mosque towers over the city and is one of the largest in East Africa. The pastel-pink façade makes it instantly recognisable. The nearby Lutheran Cathedral features a striking modernist design and is a hub for the local Protestant community.
Use Dodoma as a base to explore the captivating Kondoa Rock Art Sites. Hundreds of ancient caves pepper the Rift Valley Escarpment and form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Fenga Rock-Art Complex is one of the most impressive and features vivid paintings of people and animals. You’ll need a 4WD to access the remote Thawi Rock-Art Site, where you’ll see an incredible variety of paintings.
Hire a local guide and climb Lion Rock, a picturesque escarpment just outside the city. From the summit, you can enjoy sweeping views over the city and surrounding desert. Pack supplies and enjoy lunch at the summit before heading back down.
Getting around Dodoma
Parts of Dodoma are pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Shared minibus taxis are a fast and affordable way to get around the city, while bicycles are another option. Dodoma Airport is a five-minute drive from the city centre.
