Deshaies is a vibrant town framed by sandy beaches and rolling green hills. Set on a sheltered bay, it combines the charm of a Caribbean fishing village with traveller-friendly amenities. Bask on gold-sand beaches, dine at waterfront restaurants and visit one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the West Indies.
Things to do in Deshaies
Just a few kilometres north of Deshaies, Plage de Grande Anse beckons with gold sand and crystalline water. Relax under the shade of a leafy coconut palm and swim in the Caribbean Sea. Low-key cafes and restaurants dot the main parking lot and serve island specialties like crab soup and grilled lobster.
Plage de Clugny features a long stretch of honey-coloured sand dotted with palms and tropical trees. Calm, shallow water makes the beach ideal for kids. On clear days, the views stretch across the Caribbean Sea to the neighbouring island of Montserrat. Pack supplies and enjoy a picnic on the sand – there aren’t many services at this undeveloped beach.
Discover a tropical wonderland in Jardin Botanique de Deshaies. Rainbow-coloured parrots soar around the botanical gardens and let out the occasional squeak. Look for iguanas perched in the treetops and learn about unique flora from across the West Indies.
Settle into a breezy waterfront patio and enjoy a meal with a view. The best restaurants overlook the bay and serve fresh seafood and fruity cocktails. Order island specialties like “accras” Caribbean fish cakes and chicken curry seasoned with Creole spices. Fried “bokit” sandwiches sold at street food stalls make a tasty and affordable meal.
