Ancient archaeological sites, along with mouthwatering local cuisine, showcase the legacy of the indigenous Huastec people.
Things to do in Ciudad Valles
Stroll around the historic centre and admire handsome colonial architecture and colourful houses. Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol, a humble stone church built in the 16th century, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The tree-lined Plaza Principal is a hub for local life and enjoys a picturesque setting on the Valles River. Cafes and taquerias overlook the square and serve traditional Huastecan dishes like “zacahuil” pork tamales cooked in green banana leaves.
Cruise along the Tampaon River framed by towering limestone walls. Instead of motorised boats, you’ll paddle along the river in traditional wooden vessels. Cascada de Tamul, one of the highest waterfalls in Mexico, is your endpoint. The falls plunge more than 100 metres down a rocky cliff and into the turquoise Tampaon River.
Explore the Tamtoc Archaeological Site and learn about the ancient cultures and traditions of the Huastec civilisation. The sprawling site is dotted with dozens of structures and is one of the most important pre-Hispanic settlements in the region. Look closely to see 1,000-year-old frescoes painted onto the stonework.
Plunge into the turquoise pools at Cascadas de Minas Viejas. An easy day trip from Ciudad Valles, the attraction features a stunning main waterfall, along with smaller cascades and pools divided by natural terraces. Look for colourful birds and butterflies in the surrounding forests as you soak in the pools.
