Chuncheon is located in the river basin of Soyang and Han Rivers in Gangwon Province, South Korea. Known as the “Romantic City”, it’s surrounded by verdant mountains and man-made lakes offering visitors outdoor activities, vibrant shopping and nightlife. The city is particularly popular with Asian tourists having featured in the Korean drama Winter Sonata. The area is also famous for its dak galbi chicken dish, with visitors arriving from far and wide to sample this delicious regional fare.
The first port of call for any visitor to Chuncheon is Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street. Here travellers can sample the city’s famous tantalising chicken ribs. The narrow street comprises several restaurants all of which serve different variations of the same dish with their own secret sauce recipes. Families will enjoy a fun day out at Gangchon Rail Park. The double-tracked railway line was originally used to transport locals on the Mugunghwa train for around 70 years. These days, visitors can have fun pedalling along the railroad, while taking in the glorious mountain and Bukhangang River scenery. The pretty half-moon shaped Nami Island is the location of famous Korean TV drama Winter Sonata. Nami Islands tree lined pathways and natural beauty entices visitors from all over the world. It’s the ideal place to rent a bicycle, enjoy a picnic or take a romantic stroll. Returning to Chuncheon, discover the city’s history at the National Museum, visit Cheongpyeongsa Temple or enjoy the interactive fun at the Animation Museum. One of the best areas for shopping is Chuncheon Romantic Market which sells handicrafts, electrical appliances and clothing. Alternatively, there is a multitude of stores located in the bustling Chuncheon underground shopping mall.
Chuncheon can be reached by intercity bus from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport on a journey that takes approximately 2.5 hours. There are frequent buses and subway trains operating from downtown Seoul to Chuncheon. Within Chuncheon, taxis are the most efficient mode of transport, as they can be hailed from the sidewalk. Public buses run several routes across the city, however, they can tend to be infrequent, and exact money is required from visitors.
The area surrounding Chuncheon was settled around 1,000 years ago. During the Battle of Chuncheon and the Korean War, the city was almost completely destroyed. However, residents persevered, the city was rebuilt, and it continues to grow and thrive every day. Many festivals are now held in Chuncheon each year which attracts visitors from all over Asia and the rest of the world.
