With a rich and varied past, Changchun is an essential stop on the trail of Puyi, China’s last emperor. Translated as the “Eternal Spring”, Changchun is well-known for its imperial palace, underground markets and ginseng.
Things to do in Changchun
Take an audio tour of the Puppet Emperor’s Palace, one of the three remaining imperial palaces in China. Learn about the Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing dynasty who lived here between 1932 and 1945, and wanders through the elegant halls, courtyards and gardens built in varying architectural styles.
Get in touch with nature in Jingyuetan National Forest Park. Hire a bike and follow the 20-kilometre trail around the lake beneath a canopy of Korean Pines, Mongolian Oak and Japanese Red Pines. In winter, hit the ice rink or wander through the Deer Park, home to over 1,000 Changbaishan Sika deer.
For a day of family fun, discover China’s film industry at Changchun Film Century City. Watch 4D movies showcasing the latest special effects, be thrilled by live stunt performances and marvel at the laser suspension show. Don’t miss the Interstellar Exploration, an immersive dome screen imitating the experience of flying a spaceship.
Keen to uncover the culture? Marvel at Banruo Temple, the most celebrated Buddhist temple in Changchun. Built in 1922, the temple spans 15,000 square metres and features a Buddhist bell tower, ancient Chinese gates and a pleasant garden filled with lotus flowers and bonsai trees.
Getting around Changchun
Changchun Longjia International Airport is 30 kilometres east of Changchun; three hours away by train or 45 minutes by coach or taxi. Local buses and taxis are popular ways to get around. The light rail provides transport to Changchun Film Century City.
