Extending along the southeastern outskirts of Denver, Centennial is a modern municipality that was created in 2001, encompassing the neighbourhoods of Castlewood and Southglenn. It is named in honour of Colorado’s 1876 admission into the United States in what was the centennial year of the Declaration of Independence.
Things to do in Centennial
One of the city’s most popular green spaces is Centennial Center Park, which is home to two children’s play areas, three climbing walls and an outdoor amphitheatre. In the summer months, you can cool off at the nautilus-themed water playground. History buffs should follow the Colorado Statehood Walk, which is dotted with interpretive panels filled with interesting facts about the state.
Need a retail fix? Head to The Streets at SouthGlenn, a modern shopping mall with more than 80 retailers and a wide choice of eateries. You can browse the latest fashions at H&M and Old Navy or pick up homewares at Sur La Table and Artworks. All the latest Hollywood blockbusters are screened at the multiplex cinema while groceries from around the globe can be found at the Whole Foods Market.
Architecture enthusiasts can visit the Denver Colorado Temple, which was completed in 1986 for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is dominated by a soaring, whitewashed spire that rises to 27 metres in height and features more than 50 square metres of stained-glass windows in its design. In addition to its attractive water feature, the temple grounds are beautifully landscaped with seasonal floral displays.
