Things to do in Callantsoog
Callantsoog boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in the Netherlands. It’s long, wide and dotted with colourful beach huts and pavilions. Top up your tan on the beach and take a dip in the North Sea. Fill up on “bitterballen” Dutch meatballs and other classic snacks at beachside restaurants. The village centre is tucked behind the dunes and features cosy coffee shops and bistros.
Rent a bike and explore the scenic trails around Callantsoog. The cycle paths are well-marked and take you to neighbouring coastal towns like Julianadorp aan Zee and Den Helder. The seaside resort of Petten aan Zee is a great destination and features a long sandy beach. Climb to the top of the enormous suns for sublime views over the coast. The trail to Fort Kijkduin and Lange Jaap Lighthouse is another beautiful route.
From April to May the tulip and hyacinth fields surrounding Callantsoog burst into colour. You’ll be amazed by endless rows of rainbow-coloured blooms. Cycling is a great way to visit the tulip fields, or you can join a guided tour.
Walking trails wind through Zwanenwater and take you past several bird hides. The coastal nature reserve is a haven for cormorants, great egrets and bluethroats. Depending on the time of year, you’ll see orchids, purple heather and pink cuckoo flowers in bloom.
Getting around Callantsoog
Callantsoog is compact and easy to get around on foot or bicycle. The village is in North Holland, a one-hour drive from Amsterdam. Trains run between Amsterdam and Schagen in under one hour. From here, it is a 30-minute bus ride to Callantsoog. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is a one-hour drive away.
