Things to do in Bucaramanga
Escape the crowds in Parque del Agua, an urban oasis with cascading waterfalls and bubbling fountains. Parque García Rovira is lined with palm trees and features an impressive statue of a famous Colombian statesman. Beautiful Jardin Botánico Eloy Valenzuela is set on a crystalline stream and shaded by trees draped in moss. Look for turtles swimming in the small lakes.
Catedral de la Sagrada Familia towers over the city centre and overlooks tree-filled Parque Santander. Construction started in the 1700s and continued for almost a century. From the street you’ll notice the ornate façade and impressive twin belltowers. Inside, you can admire the gleaming Carrara marble altar and colourful stained-glass windows.
Centuries-old Capilla de los Dolores welcomes you with a beautiful, whitewashed façade. It’s one of the oldest buildings in the city and one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Colombia.
Bucaramanga is home to almost a dozen universities and is fuelled by a lively community of students. The city is filled with excellent restaurants run by young chefs who are passionate about the Colombian food scene. Enjoy everything from steak and ceviche to international cuisines like Italian and Lebanese.
Getting around Bucaramanga
Parts of Bucaramanga are pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. In other parts of the city, it’s best to take a taxi. Buses are a fast and affordable way to get around. Palonegro International Airport is a 40-minute drive away.
