With a rich history dating back to the Nassau era, the quaint town of Breda offers a culturally enriching experience. The town sits in the south-west region of the Netherlands and is home to many cultural delights including the Great Church, the Begijnhof Museum and the grand Breda Castle.
Things to do in Breda
Visit the 13th-century Begijnhof Museum in Breda to see a walled complex consisting of quaint cottages and a small church. Head to the museum to learn about the origins of Breda and the life of the Beguine’s who once occupied the historical complex.
Just behind Breda Castle in the city centre sits Valkenberg Park. This tranquil green space once belonged to the castle as part of the grounds and now serves as a public park featuring a pond, fountains and plenty of flora and fauna. Take a walk around the gardens to see the remains of the defence tower and the Baronie monument.
Travelling with the kids? Reptile House De Aarde is a mini zoo owned by an avid reptile lover, which centres entirely around reptile care. The zoo houses animals from all over the world and hosts snake talks, feeding sessions and animal interactions.
To the south of the city sits Ginneken, a hip neighbourhood that’s home to excellent restaurants, quirky bars and a thriving local market in summer. The area should be explored on foot as it's akin to a small village where you can wander past the local pubs.
