Ancient stone walls loop around the city of Braganca. The capital of Trás-os-Montes was once a military stronghold and boasts some of the best-preserved medieval architecture in Portugal. Explore the centuries-old citadel, hop between local history museums and admire a jewel box of churches and cathedrals.
Things to do in Bragança
Sé is set on the main square and features a modest white façade with beautiful stone doorways and window frames. The tiny cathedral has a peaceful atmosphere and is a lovely example of traditional Portuguese architecture. Arched cloisters wrap around the grass-covered central courtyard.
Step back in time in Cidadela, a 12th-century fortress surrounded by imposing stone walls. Getting lost in the winding narrow lanes is part of the fun. Stock up on colourful handicrafts at souvenir shops and enjoy flaky Portuguese custard tarts at sidewalk cafés.
Marvel at four floors of swords, guns and other weapons at Museu Militar. The museum occupies a heavily fortified stone tower and brings you up to speed on the city’s military legacy. Exhibits range from medieval suits of armour to World War I rifles. Climb to the top of the tower for sweeping views over the city.
“Presunto” smoked ham, horseshoe-shaped Alheira sausages and “cabrito” roast goat are just some of the local specialties you can try in Braganca. Dine in sun-drenched courtyards or settle into oak-panelled dining rooms lit with sparkling chandeliers.
Use Braganca as a launchpad to Park Natural de Montesinho. Trails wind through the park and take you into the foothills of the Serra da Coroa mountains, where you can spot animals like Iberian lynx and European otters. Stop for lunch in picturesque villages like Gimonde, where ancient Roman bridges still span across the river.
