Things to do in Bishkek
Bishkek is a hub for Kyrgyz arts and culture. Don’t miss the intricate Kyrgyz embroidery, evocative paintings and hand-felted rugs on show at the State Museum of Fine Arts. Nissa Art Salon occupies a former cathedral and hosts rotating exhibits featuring local Kyrgyz artists.
Leafy Dubovy Park is characterised by towering oak trees. Stroll around the open-air sculpture garden and admire paintings being sold by local artists. Nearby Ala-Too Square is anchored by a statue of national hero, Manas the Great. The square comes alive with beautiful flower displays and bubbling fountains in the summer.
Cavernous Osh Bazaar is one of the largest in the country and is brimming with colourful stalls. Head to the market to pick up fragrant spices, carved wooden trunks, hand-embroidered blankets and traditional felted “ak kalpak” hats.
Bishkek boasts a vibrant culinary scene heavily influenced by the country’s Central Asian location. Dine on “shashlyk” meat kebabs, “laghman” pulled noodles and “gok chuchvara” vegetarian dumplings. Head to an international restaurant to enjoy Western dishes and imported wine. Wrap up your night at a cocktail bar or craft brewery.
Many travellers use Bishkek as a launchpad to the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Mountains. The range is laced with scenic hiking trails that take you to shimmering glaciers, flower-filled fields and traditional mountain villages. Visit Ala Archa National Park to discover lush juniper forests and tumbling waterfalls.
Getting around Bishkek
Kyrgyzstan is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Taxis are a fast and affordable way to get around the city or you can use local “marshrutka” minibuses. Manas International Airport is a 30-minute drive from the city centre.
