Things to do in Banda Aceh
The Museum Aceh is a good starting point to learn about the history and culture of the region, with exhibits displaying ceramics, weaponry, traditional handicrafts and clothing. It also features a large bell that was gifted by China’s Emperor to the Sultan of Aceh in the 15th century and a Dutch-built house that exemplifies Aceh’s unique architecture.
Masjid Raya Baiturrahman, or the Grand Mosque, lies in the heart of Banda Aceh, with its four white minarets towering over the city. Step inside to admire its extraordinary Islamic architecture and ornamentation, set beneath five onion-shaped domes.
To gain a better insight into the Aceh War, travel just outside the city centre to visit Cut Nya Dien House that was built as a replica of this revolutionary heroine’s dwelling. Learn about the leading role she played in rebelling against Dutch invaders before being captured and exiled to West Java in 1906.
Interested in water sports? Ulee Lheue is a popular recreational spot for locals, located six kilometres from the city centre. Go swimming in the calm waters and watch the sunset over the Malacca Straits or take a boat trip to visit the idyllic nearby islands of Sabang and Weh.
Getting around Banda Aceh
Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport is the main entry point for visitors to Banda Aceh and located around 40 minutes’ drive east of the city centre. Becak motorbike taxis and minibuses known as labi-labi are the main means of getting around the city, together with private taxis.
