Backed by rugged hills that descend steeply to the Atlantic Ocean, Balneario Camboriu is an attractive beachside city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. It’s renowned for its electronic music scene, with the city home to some of the best nightclubs in Brazil. Originally inhabited by the Tupi-Guarani people, Balneario Camboriu is often referred to as the “Brazilian Dubai” due to its skyscrapers and air of affluence.
Things to do in Balneário Camboriú
Overlooking Balneario Camboriu is the Christ Light, a whitewashed statue inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer. It rises to 33 metres in height and depicts Jesus with one arm outstretched and the other holding a symbolic sun that shines a spotlight across the city. Visit after dark to see the statue illuminated in changing colours.
At the mouth of the Rio Camboriu is Unipraias Park, a wooded area that offers magnificent views across the city from its cable cars. Journey to the Mata Atlântica Station to explore Youhooo! the Fantastic Forest or fly above the canopy on the Zip Rider. Nearby is the Oceanic Aquarium, where more than 100 marine species from across the globe are exhibited.
Stretching the length of the city is Praia de Camboriu, a golden sweep of sand where you can sunbathe and swim in the refreshing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Backing the beach is Avenida Atlântica, a bustling boulevard that’s lined with high-rise buildings, restaurants and bars. Fringing the adjacent headland is Praia das Laranjeiras, a popular setting for water sports.
Getting around Balneário Camboriú
Balneario Camboriu is just over an hour’s drive from Navegantes International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Brazil. Regular buses connect to Balneario Camboriu and travel throughout the city, accessing most of its attractions. A cable car connects Praia de Camboriu with Praia das Laranjeiras.
