Located a short drive north of Durban, Ballito is an affluent town and a popular getaway on KwaZulu-Natal’s Dolphin Coast. Once a sugar cane farm, it was developed in 1954 as a private township and has rapidly grown since, with shopping malls, family-friendly attractions and beautiful beaches adding to its allure.
Things to do in Ballito
For a retail fix, head to the Ballito Junction Regional Mall, which is home to more than 200 stores set across three levels. You can shop for the latest fashions at Cotton On, pick up a new pair of shoes at Side Step or browse the leather goods at The Coachman. The complex is also home to a cinema complex and plenty of eateries, including Chicken Licken, Simply Asia and the Sausage Saloon.
One of Ballito’s most popular stretches of sand is Willard Beach, which is backed by a breezy promenade lined with cafes and restaurants. It’s renowned for its surf breaks and hosts the annual Ballito Pro and features tidal pools that are ideal for families looking for calm waters. Further north is Thompsons Beach, which is watched over by sea-fed baths.
Travelling with kids? Head to Sugar Rush Park, which is surrounded by farmland a short drive inland from Ballito. It offers everything from pump tracks to jungle gyms and treasure hunts, as well as laser tag and trampolines. Sugar Rush Park is beloved for its picturesque rural setting and on-site restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and snacks.
Getting around Ballito
Ballito is around 45 minutes’ drive from the centre of Durban and 30 minutes from King Shaka International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Africa and the Middle East. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting to Ballito and exploring the Dolphin Coast.
