Originally settled in the 15th century, Bačka Topola lies in the far north of Serbia near the border with Hungary. It is named after the historical region in which it is located, Bačka, and the Serbian word for poplar (“Topola”). Bačka Topola is home to the second-oldest soccer club in the Serbian SuperLiga, TSC Bačka Topola.
Things to do in Bačka Topola
Occupying one of the town’s oldest buildings is the Museum of Bačka Topola, which exhibits archaeological findings dating back to the Stone Age. Learn about the town’s resettlement in 1750 and the prominent local resident Fernbach Balint, who conducted botanical research for the Hungarian National Museum. Works by artists with links to Bačka Topola are also exhibited.
Opposite the Museum of Bačka Topola is Gradski Park, a tranquil green space and recreational hub. In addition to its tree-lined walking trails, there’s a children’s playground and tennis courts. On the northern edge of the park is the TSC Arena, a 4,500-capacity soccer stadium that serves as the home ground of TSC Bačka Topola.
Sprawling north of Bačka Topola is Zobnatica Lake, which is a popular setting for swimming, fishing and boating in the summer months. You can rent a bicycle to explore the lake shore at your leisure or challenge your family and friends to a game of beach volleyball. Nearby is a historic, four-storey windmill that has become a symbol of Bačka Topola.
Getting around Bačka Topola
Bačka Topola is around a one-hour drive from Novi Sad and 1.5 hours from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Trains connect from the Serbian capital to the Bačka Topola railway station and buses travel through the town. The centre of Bačka Topola can easily be explored on foot.
