Located partway between Accra and Tema, Ashaiman is a residential and commercial town in the Ghanaian capital. It is named after its founder, Nii Ashai, with Ashaiman translating as “Ashai’s town”. Ashaiman provides a convenient base for accessing both the sights of Ghana and the huge seaport of Tema.
Things to do in Ashonman
In the heart of Ashaiman is Kofi Nimo Park, which features a soccer pitch and recreational facilities for the local residents. Nearby are casual eateries selling everything from pizza to traditional Ghanaian cuisine, as well as a cinema where international films are screened. For a retail fix, head to the China Mall, which is stocked high with household goods.
From Ashaiman, you can easily access most of Accra’s attractions, including the Makola Market and the Black Star Gate. Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, is laid to rest nearby within a striking mausoleum designed by Don Arthur. At the National Museum, you’ll find exhibits dedicated to archaeological, ethnography and art, such as traditional musical instruments, masks and chiefs' regalia.
Accra is fringed by a string of beaches overlooking the Gulf of Guinea, with one of the closest to Ashaiman being Serenity Beach. Further west is Laboma Beach, which is lined with restaurants where you can watch the world go by. At Sakumono Beach, you can cast a fishing line to see what’s biting or go horseback riding along the sand before listening to live reggae at one of the beachfront bars.
Getting around Ashonman
Ashaiman is around 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Accra and Kotoka International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Buses connect to Ashaiman and tro-tro mini buses are readily available for getting around. Renting a car gives you greater freedom to explore the area.
