Set at the foot of an ancient castle, Afyon is full of trendy cafes, shisha houses and student bars surrounding its university. Spend your time exploring the atmospheric Ottoman Quarter, peering into ancient mosques and devouring delicious Turkish cuisine.
Things to do in Afyon
Afyon is anchored by a characterful Ottoman Quarter studded with beautiful mosques. Supported by 40 soaring columns, Ulu Cami is the city's signature place of worship. Its minaret is adorned with emerald tiles. The historic district is especially beautiful at sunset when the colourful wooden houses acquire a golden glow.
Afyon played an important role in Turkey's War of Independence, with Ataturk establishing the city as his headquarters back in 1922. Today the legacy is commemorated with a larger-than-life statue in Hukumet Meydani, the city's main square.
Set high on a craggy outcrop, Afyon Kale offers sweeping views over the city. While it was once used as an outpost for opium production, the castle is now empty. That hasn't stopped it from retaining its "Black Castle of Opium" nickname. Access is via a steep path that winds past ancient Ottoman guard towers.
Craving some local delicacies? Snag a table at Mihrioglu Konagi, an atmospheric garden restaurant serving Anatolian classics, such as buttery cheese pastries, veal sausage and Turkish ravioli. Carnivores will love local favourite Bolu Dagı Mangalevi, a no-frills restaurant serving juicy kofte, chicken skewers and steak.
Getting around Afyon
Afyon is easy to get around on foot, especially if you stick to the Ottoman Quarter. You'll also find plenty of taxis and local minibuses cruising the streets. You can arrive on long-distance buses from major cities like Ankara, Izmir and Istanbul.
