preloadA luxury dining room in the hotel

Over the years Melbourne has built up an unfaltering reputation for extravagant restaurants, innovative dishes and chic dining concepts that attract people from around the world. From boutique laneway hangouts and pop-up street vendors to Michelin-starred establishments and celebrity chefs, Melbourne has a diverse and gifted foodie culture.

However, the best part of Melbourne’s culinary prowess is that visitors don’t even need to leave their hotel to enjoy a delicious meal in an award-winning setting. Guests can indulge in gourmet fare and a cocktail or two then retire to their luxurious room with their tastebuds tantalised and treated.

With so many hotels boasting onsite restaurants, it can be difficult finding the best one. Our 26 million-plus Australian visitors each year have shown us which Melbourne hotels are most popular with the foodie crowd. Whether it’s an exclusive restaurant, charming bar, a convenient café or all three, these 26 hotels have won over their guests with exceptional dining options.

Melbourne’s Top 5 Food Trucks

Melbourne, and in fact Australia, has experienced a food truck revolution of late. What started out as a couple of innovative taco and burger vendors has turned into whole parking lots of swoon-worthy eats all served from the back of a van. Here are five Melbourne food trucks you shouldn’t miss.

1. Hammer & Tong

You might recognise the name from their other location in Fitzroy, but you’ll certainly remember the food being whipped up at this crowd favourite. Foodies can find the truck at BCKYRD in Brunswick on weekends and at various locations during the week. Be sure to follow them on social media to track down the van, and order either the soft shell crab burger, lobster roll or lavender yoghurt custard.

Photo|Burger On Table| GETTYIMAGES – DAISY KING – EYEEM

2. Mr Burger

Mr Burger went the opposite route to Hammer & Tong, starting out as one food truck and branching out into four shops and eventually seven trucks. Clearly, they’re doing something right. It starts with the burgers, made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients to ensure juicy patties, crisp lettuce and the ever-important gooey cheese.

Make sure you add the signature sauce and shaker chips with chipotle seasoning. Throw caution to the wind and wash it all down with a slurp-worthy milkshake while you’re at it. With six food trucks roaming Melbourne, it won’t take foodies long to find their next meal here.

3. Lil Nom Noms

Vietnamese food is so hot right now. Lucky for visitors, they only need to find themselves in line for the Lil Nom Noms truck to see why. With a menu comprised of rice paper rolls, steamed bao, rice noodle salads and more, this is one lunch or dinner that won’t leave food-lovers  feeling guilty.

The fresh and light food is utterly delicious and filling in all the right ways. We’re quite partial to the braised pork steamed bao, which comes with coriander and cucumber. Follow Lil Nom Noms on Twitter to find out its next location.

A closeup photo of a signature Korean dish called Bibimbap, consists of beef, raw egg, namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste), soy sauce, or doenjang, a fermented soybean paste.

4. Bibimbap

Let’s not forget those magicians from a little place called Korea who’ve brought Australia the invaluable gift of bibimbap. This mixed bowl of fresh veggies and tender meat all fried in a hot pot goes down a treat.

It’s another light and healthy option, with a little bit of indulgence, which has drawn people from all around Melbourne. In fact, the immense popularity of Korean helped these savvy chefs gain crowdfunding for their food truck named after the delicious meal.

5. Billy Van Creamery

It’s only right to include a dessert option on this list, and Billy Van Creamery certainly fits the bill. These experienced gelato connoisseurs are experts at crafting rich gelato by hand, accentuating each flavour with natural ingredients such as nuts and vanilla beans.

Not only is it tasty and refreshing, but it’s also a lot healthier than the usual store-bought ice cream. Watermelon, chocolate and vanilla are all perennial favourites. Patrons can find Billy Van Creamery at the Hank Marvin Markets and elsewhere in Melbourne.

Sweet Spots: Melbourne’s Best Dessert Bars

Sure, dinner is always important, but few things top a night off better than rich, chocolatey dessert. You don’t have to settle for a 7-Eleven ice block in Melbourne. The city is home to numerous dessert bars, all putting their own fantastic twists on this timeless meal. Here are three Melbourne dessert bars to tick off your list.

1. Om Nom

Located within Adelphi Hotel, this iconic dessert bar is quite literally serving you pieces of art. If only they weren’t so delicious, they might have a chance of lasting longer than a few seconds. Appeasing both eyes and tastebuds, the menu here includes such dreamy delights such as the chocolate parfait, passion fruit curd, panna cotta and biscuit brownies.

Except they aren’t just “biscuit brownies”. They’re a mouthwatering mix of biscuit brownies in mint cremeux, dark chocolate mousse, hazelnut crunch feuilletine and chocolate glaze.

2. Cobb Lane

Located out in the suburb of Yarraville, Cobb Lane is well worth the drive. The bakery is a well-timed creation of pastry magician Matt Forbes who has crafted some of the city’s best sweet-tooth treats.

Doughnuts are a house specialty, surprising many with their exotic fillings such as coconut and kaffir lime with rice pudding. Visitors will want to also try the ginger toffee balls and the chocolate and berry lamingtons, and wash it all down with a good old cup of coffee or tea.

3. Brunetti

Visitors needn’t spend much at Brunetti to satisfy their aching sweet tooth. The renowned dessert bar has a wide assortment of treats, ranging from bite-size slice and pastries, to sumptuous take-home cakes that make everyone want to ditch the knife and grab a handful.

There are also chocolates to rival Willy Wonka, plain and filled biscotti, and gelato of all flavours including mango, Nutella, and wild berry cheesecake, leaving many visitors wanting to try them all.
