Things to do in Bahrain
Most visits to Bahrain start in Manama, the country’s dynamic capital. Stroll along the skyscraper-lined corniche and duck into bustling souqs to admire colourful spices, Persian carpets, jewellery and pearls. Every year, adrenalin-junkies flock to attend the legendary Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix. Guided tours take you behind the scenes of the iconic racetrack located at Al Sakhir Tower.
One of the country’s top cultural attractions, Bahrain National Museum charts the people, places and events that have shaped the Gulf nation over the centuries. Learn about the country’s flourishing pearl trade and view archaeological treasures from the ancient Kingdom of Dilmun.
The UNESCO-listed Bahrain Fort is perched on the waterfront and commands sweeping views over the Gulf. Also known as Qalat Al Bahrain, the mighty stronghold was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. After exploring the fort, enjoy coffee and cake at the excellent Museum Café.
Take a walk on the wild side at Al Areen Wildlife Park & Reserve. The nature reserve is home to more than 80 species of birds, as well as local animals like the majestic Arabian oryx. Hike along scenic trails or explore the park on the educational bus tour. On the coast, dive sites such as Bulthama Reef and the Caisson Wreck are brimming with rainbow-coloured corals and fish.
Getting around Bahrain
In cities and towns, metered taxis are often the fastest and most comfortable way to get around. Manama is serviced by local buses while rental cars are an easy way to explore Bahrain at your own pace. Bahrain International Airport is a 15-minute drive from the city centre.
