Escape to a Greek paradise in the Sporades, a postcard-perfect archipelago marooned in the Aegean Sea. The archipelago is made up of dozens of islands, though just four are inhabited – Skiathos, Skyros, Skopelos and Alonnisos. Sunbathe on sandy beaches, hike through sun-dappled pine forests and discover centuries of Cycladic history, culture and cuisine.
Things to do in Sporades
White-sand beaches framed by rolling green hills and fragrant pine forests attract hordes of sunseekers to Skiathos. It’s the busiest island in the Sporades and features a bustling main town packed with cafes, bars and tavernas. Wander around the cobbled centre, sip coffee in tiny plazas and be charmed by whitewashed houses with cerulean doors and window shutters. Scenic trails wind through the interior and lead to centuries-old churches and monasteries.
Skyros is the largest island in the Sporades group and showcases a variety of Aegean landscapes. Golden sand beaches fringe the northern end of the island. The south is more dramatic and features a rugged coastline framed by hills. Perched on a hillside, Skyros Town is a gateway to the island and commands sweeping views over the Aegean Sea.
The southern coast of Skopelos boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Sporades. Most feature strips of pebble-and-sand fringed by turquoise water. Almonds, plums and wild herbs thrive in the fertile interior and often feature on local menus.
Enormous oak trees and Aleppo pines tower over Alonnisos. The island is the most remote in the Sporades and features a mix of rocky coastline and picturesque bays. Vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards dot the wooded interior. The island is set within the National Marine Park of Alonnisos, a pristine sanctuary where you can spot rare seabirds, dolphins, whales and Mediterranean monk seals.
Getting around Sporades
All towns and villages in the Sporades are pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Ferries are the best way to travel between the main islands. Rental cars, scooters and motorbikes offer the freedom to explore each island at your own pace. Ferries connect the Sporades islands with the ports of Volos and Agios Konstantinos on the Greek mainland.
