Things to do in Shenyang
Immerse yourself in Shenyang’s fascinating Manchu history at the 17th-century Mukden Palace, which showcases impressive Qing dynasty architecture. Inside, you’ll find the Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum, which houses priceless treasures and historic artefacts pertaining to the Qing dynasty. Afterwards, pay respects to the founding emperor of the Qing dynasty, Nuhaci, at the revered Fuling Mausoleum.
Looking to chill out among nature? Head to the Shenyang Botanical Garden, about 35 minutes’ drive from the city centre, to explore 189 hectares of plants from around China. Themed gardens, such as the Azalea Garden, Rose Garden and Peony Garden, sit alongside a tranquil lake, hills and evergreen pine trees. A peaceful spot within the city, head to Beiling Park, where you can relax on the soft grass and listen to street musicians.
If you’re visiting with your family, take the kids to Royal Ocean World, where they can see an array of marine animals, watch dolphin shows and see unique reptiles in the Century Forest. Don’t forget about the Happy Family Mall, which features an indoor ice-skating rink and rollerblading rink.
Stroll back in time down Shengjing Ancient Cultural Street, which recreates the 17th-century facades of old-world Shenyang. Within these buildings you’ll find a number of gift shops, food outlets and historical displays. Time your visit for the annual Shenyang International Ice and Snow Festival, held between December and February. You’ll see skiing, ice sculptures and horseback shooting during the event.
