Escape to Samos and enjoy a sun-drenched Mediterranean getaway. The island is marooned in the Aegean Sea and surrounded by sandy beaches and aquamarine bays. Enjoy the infectious holiday atmosphere in Vathy or escape to hidden beaches and remote mountain villages.
Things to do in Samos
Vathy, also known as Samos Town, is a great base to explore the island. It’s built around a picturesque natural harbour and filled with Venetian and Neoclassical buildings. Stroll around the lively town centre and browse colourful galleries and gift shops.
Soft sand and azure water make Livadaki Beach one of the best on the island. The beach wraps around a sheltered cove and features shallow, crystalline water. Sunbathe on the sand and order snacks and drinks from the laid-back beach bar.
Guided tours take you deep into Evpalinos Tunnel. It was carved into the mountainside in 524 BC to source fresh drinking water and is a feat of ancient engineering. Follow the tunnel more than a kilometre into the mountain.
Step back in time and experience the grandeur of Heraion. The sanctuary is dedicated to the Greek goddess Hera and is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the enormous buildings have crumbled you can still see the foundations of the enormous 6th-century sanctuary. Learn more about the site at the Archaeological Museum in Vethy. Inside you can view artefacts found at the sanctuary, including bronze statues and sculptures.
From open-air cafes to elegant waterfront bistros, there are lots of places to drink and dine on Samos. Traditional tavernas are the best places to try Greek cuisine. Enjoy local dishes like crispy chickpea fritters topped with yoghurt and fried zucchini blossoms filled with rice. Finish your meal with a glass of Muscat, a sweet wine made in the mountainous vineyards that dot the interior.
