Things to do in Catania
Centuries-old castles, atmospheric towns and an active volcano make the Province of Catania an unforgettable destination.
Sightsee in the port city of Catania. Nestled at the base of Mount Etna, Catania is one of Sicily’s largest cities. It centres around the bustling Piazza del Duomo with its ornate Fontana dell’Elefante, which is watched over by the Baroque-style Basilica Cattedrale Sant’Agata. Admire the monumental towers of the Castello Ursino and visit the UNESCO-listed Monastero dei Benedettini before soaking up the sights, sounds and smells of La Pescheria market.
Hike to the summit of Mount Etna. Rising to 3,329 metres in height, Mount Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe and climbing to its summit is a must-do for active travellers. Hike along its scree slopes to peer into the impressive caldera and marvel at one of the volcano’s lava tubes. From the top, there are magnificent views across the island of Sicily. If you don’t want to walk, it’s also possible to tour Mount Etna by bicycle, ATV or jeep.
Visit the twin towns of Aci Castello and Aci Trezza. Connected by a coastal promenade, these charming towns offer an authentic taste of the Sicilian lifestyle. Soak up the views from the 11th-century Norman castle of Aci Castello before climbing down the sea stairs for a swim in the waters below. In Aci Trezza, you can explore the beautiful Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista or join a boat cruise to go snorkelling in the adjacent marine reserve.
