Things to do in Fortaleza
As the capital of the Brazilian state of Ceará, Fortaleza is a hub for arts, culture and entertainment. Enjoy a traditional folk dance performance at José de Alencar Theatre and admire modern masterpieces at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea. Catedral Metropolitana soars over the city centre and features a striking Neo-Gothic façade and striking twin towers. The Centro de Turismo occupies a 19th-century prison and is filled with stalls selling handmade arts and crafts.
Memorial da Cultura Cearense features exhibits on the local cultures and traditions of Ceará state. It’s part of the lively Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura complex, which sprawls across several city blocks and features cafes, bars, restaurants, boutiques and artisan workshops. Many are housed in beautifully restored historic buildings.
The beaches in Fortaleza rival the likes of those found in Rio de Janeiro, with gold sand, swaying palms and party atmospheres. Praia do Futuro is one of the most popular stretches of sand and is lined with “barracas” serving cocktails, beer and ocean-fresh seafood.
Praia do Meireles is another photogenic urban beach fringed by a breezy promenade. Sip an ice-cold beer at one of the waterfront beach bars and shop for colourful souvenirs at the evening market. Rolling waves make nearby Leste Oeste one of the top surf spots in Ceará.
