Nestled near the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi is well-known for its infamous Burma Railway, which has inspired numerous war films, museums and a sombre “Death Railway” experience. This township offers more than just war history, as it also features bamboo rafting, temple ruins, karaoke bars and gemstone sellers.
Things to do in Kanchanaburi
You’d be amiss visiting Kanchanaburi without getting the full Burma Railway experience. This includes seeing the infamous Japanese rail bridge constructed by World War II POWs and riding a section of the railway. Afterwards, visit the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery to pay respects at the graves of 7,000 Allied and Dutch soldiers. You can also learn about the railway’s history through informative exhibits at the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre.
Combine World War II history with Thai artwork at the Arts Gallery and War Museum, where you can see paintings of Miss Thailand World, gemstone displays and World War II artefacts. Don’t miss the Mueang Sing Historical Park, home to the remains of two ancient Khmer temples dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
Do you love the outdoors? Head to the popular Sai Yok Noi Waterfall for a leisurely swim, picnic on the grass or a meal of local produce from one of the food vendors. Active travellers will love the hiking trails within nearby Erawan National Park, which also boasts tiered waterfalls, swimming holes and centuries-old cave systems.
Spend a little time in the actual township to dine at cosy coffee shops and waterfront restaurants. There’s also a strip of lively bars and nightclubs along the river, including the African-inspired Buddha Bar and the karaoke bar called Glitzy.
