Surrounded by lush forests, Elverum is a lively town set on the Glomma River. The town has a long history of forestry and logging, which can be discovered at the excellent Norwegian Forestry Museum. Atmospheric cafes and restaurants make Elverum a great base for exploring Innlandet County.
Things to do in Elverum
The Norsk Forestry Museum is Elverum’s star attraction and explores how trees have shaped the Scandinavian nation over the centuries. Exhibits cover everything from forestry and woodcarving to wildlife and conservation. The magnificent Fantastic Tree sculpture towers 7.5 metres over the museum and is made from gleaming metal pipes.
Elverum is dotted with cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy pickled herring, reindeer steak and other local dishes. For delicious Norwegian food with fantastic views over the river, visit the on-site restaurant at the Norsk Forestry Museum. If you’re craving Western food, try the award-winning local pizza restaurant.
Almost 100 beautifully restored historic buildings dot the open-air Glomdal Museum. All were salvaged from across the Glomma Valley and range from rustic log cabins to colourful timber buildings with grass-covered roofs. Kids love patting the friendly farm animals and riding in the horse-drawn hay wagon.
Built in the 1600s, Christiansfjell Fortress once stood guard over the port city. Today you can wander around the ruins and enjoy the sweeping views over the river and forests. The trailhead to Flotsberget Peak is a short drive out of town and rewards you with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside.
Getting around Elverum
The Elverum town centre is compact and easy to get around on foot, while its also serviced by local buses. Rental cars are a good way to explore surrounding sights and attractions and trains run between Elverum and Oslo in around two hours. Oslo Airport is a 1.5-hour drive south.
