The lakes that dot Winter Haven are connected by a network of scenic canals. Many of the waterways are lined with restaurants where you can enjoy delicious food and watch the vibrant sunsets. Winter Haven is known as the “Water Ski Capital of the World” and is a great place to try the adrenaline-fuelled sport. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and leisurely boat tours are ideal if you prefer more relaxing water activities.
Legoland Florida Resort is set on the banks of Lake Eloise and is filled with rides and attractions inspired by the iconic brand. Ride colourful rollercoasters and take a spin on the giant spaceship. Cypress Gardens is set within the park and features an enormous banyan tree planted in the 1930s.
The historic downtown district has been beautifully restored and features landmarks like the Art Deco-style Ritz Theatre. Other heritage buildings have been reimagined as cafes, boutiques and locally-owned galleries. Theatre Winter Haven is one of the best community performing arts groups in the United States, with shows often starring award-winning actors.
Venture out of the city to explore Circle B Bar Reserve. The former cattle ranch is laced with scenic forest trails and wetland boardwalks where you can spot alligators, American kestrels and other wildlife.
Getting around Winter Haven
Winter Haven’s historic downtown core is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore Winter Haven at your own pace. The city is a one-hour drive from Tampa and 1.5 hours from Tampa International Airport. Orlando is a one-hour drive north.
